WASHINGTON (TVR) – More than 800 Transportation Security Administration (TSA) workers stationed at airports across the country failed drug and alcohol tests, according to documents sought by KGW-TV.

The NBC station in Portland, OR, obtained the records through a Freedom of Information Act request.

Nationwide, 858 TSA workers “tested positive for drugs or alcohol between 2010 and 2016,” the station’s senior investigative reporter, Kyle Iboshi, said.

The tests are either given randomly or because of “reasonable suspicion” an employee may be under the influence of a substance.

Busiest Airports See Highest Rates

KGW reported that some of the nation’s busiest airports had the highest failure rates.

At Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), 51 TSA workers tested positive, the station said; 40 at New York’s John F. Kennedy airport (JFK); and 35 at Boston’s Logan International Airport (BOS).

The station reported that a TSA spokesperson said employees who fail a test “are fired.”

“Illegal substances include, but are not limited to, cocaine, marijuana, opiates, amphetamines, and phencyclidine [PCP],” TSA spokesman Nico Melendez is quoted as saying.

TSA Rate Below Federal Average

The TSA gave 17,649 workers random drug tests last year, about 30% of the total TSA workforce.

Of those, 0.55% (97 workers) tested positive, “far below” the rate for other federal employees, KGW reported.

The station said the rate of positive drug tests for all federal employees in “safety sensitive” jobs was 1.5%.

Committee: TSA Misconduct ‘Threatens’ Security

The majority staff of the House Homeland Security Committee titled a 2016 report: “Misconduct at TSA Threatens the Security of the Flying Public.”

The committee found “continuous scandals” and misconduct that “has grown over time.”

It cited a study from the U.S. Government Accountability Office in 2013 that found misconduct by TSA employees “increased by almost 27%” in two years and that “TSA did not have the processes in place to adequately address it.”

Subsequently, the number of misconduct allegations filed against TSA employees “increased by 28.5% from fiscal year 2013 to 2015,” the House report found — “equivalent to one in every three” TSA workers.
