WASHINGTON (TVR) – The Transportation Security Administration has seized a one-day record number of firearms in carry-on bags at airports nationwide.
TSA agents confiscated 21 firearms, a stun cane, inert explosives, and other prohibited items on Feb. 23rd, the agency announced Thursday.
That number of items easily broke the previous one-day record of 18 items from 2014.
On the record-setting day last week, TSA says its agents also seized a “realistic replica suicide vest and claymore mine” from a passenger’s checked bag at El Paso International Airport.
Agents also found a live smoke grenade in a carry-on bag at the Raleigh-Durham International Airport.
Fines for trying to bring dangerous or prohibited items on a plane can rise to $11,000, the TSA said in a statement.
Last year, TSA screeners said they found 3,391 guns in carry on bags—an average of nine a day—and a sharp increase of 28% from 2015.\
